Here is more information about the costume and how it informs the character:
As if Max Cady couldn’t get his odiousness across any clearer, he gives the audience (both the film viewers and those in the theatre watching the John Ritter comedy) he violates the basic rules of movie theatre etiquette by blocking the screen down in front, lighting a cigar (with a lighter that has an electric blinker), and laughing in a way that distracts everyone in the vicinity. This scene marks a turning point whereby Cady extends his awful persona to the collective Cape Fear community via the movie theatre. One can only imagine how greasy that vintage shirt is.
Did you know? Bob dropped down to a lean 4% body fat to play Max Cady. He also paid a dentist $5k to grind the his teeth down (then $20k to fix them). (via IMDb)
